NOTE: McGAUGHEY, Richard Barry Sr. Son of the late Francis and Emily (O'Neil) and a lifelong resident of Holbrook, passed away surrounded by his family on May 12, 2021. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Josephine Tenore McGaughey. He was the devoted father of ten children, J. Michael McGaughey of Holbrook, Richard Barry McGaughey, Jr. and his wife Leah of Holbrook, Diane McGaughey Pellitteri and her husband Chris of Holbrook, Maria McGaughey Smith and her husband Timothy of Holbrook, Steven McGaughey and his wife Jennifer of Plymouth, Joanna McGaughey Parker and her husband Christopher of Holbrook, Daniel McGaughey and his wife Sandra of Plymouth, Matthew McGaughey and his wife Marcella of Hingham, Tony McGaughey and his wife Sarah of Framingham, and Jason McGaughey of Holbrook. He was the loving and devoted grandfather of twenty-one grandchildren: Jaclyn, Richard, III, Joseph, Ryan, Maria, Kevin, Emma, Kiley, Christopher, Michael, Adam, Abigail, Anthony, Catherine, Maggie, Nathaniel, Patrick, Luke, Molly, Bryce and Brooke. He was predeceased by his son, Nathaniel McGaughey, his brothers Frank McGaughey and Lonnie McGaughey, and his sisters Joan Scott, Barbara Clifford, Emily Marshall. He is survived by his sister, Elinor Cassidy. A graduate of Holbrook High School's Class of 1956, he proudly served the town of Holbrook throughout his years, and if there was a committee to be on, Rick was on it. He was a longstanding member of the Saint Joseph's finance committee, assisting in paying off the mortgage of the Church, the same Church where you could find him sitting in the back every weekend for Mass. He was elected to six consecutive 3-year terms on Holbrook's Board of Selectmen, the longest tenure in Holbrook's history. While holding this position, he helped the organization of the town's annual Memorial Day Parade, Holbrook's yearly Christmas tree lighting, the creation of the Veteran's Memorial in Mary Wales Park, helped to obtain a donation for the public library, and so much more. He also served on the Housing Authority of Holbrook and the Holbrook Cemetery Committee. For 48 years, Rick was involved with the Stan Mikita American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association, first as a devoted parent, and then as a dedicated supporter. As a proprietor of family run businesses and real estate, in 1968, he became the proud owner of Hennessy News, a small-town, family-run business in Hingham. He eventually opened seventeen stores in several towns. Throughout the years, he was well known on the South Shore as a generous and fair employer to generations of families. Rick enjoyed being an avid Boston sports fan and a Red Sox season ticket holder for 38 years. While he loved Boston sports, he loved watching his children and grandchildren play more. You could find him, up at the park, standing behind the center field fence, either alone or with his brother Lonnie, simply enjoying the game of baseball. He was an amazing father, grandfather, friend and teacher. What mattered most to Rick, however, was his family and his faith. Whether you called him Rick, Dad, Papa or friend, he answered the call. He had a strong belief in the power and bond of family and its immense importance in life. He had a way of welcoming anyone and everyone into his family. He had a strong intellect and spoke with influence. His stories will live on for decades. He asked little, gave generously and loved deeply. He will be deeply missed by his friends but most of all his family. Visiting Hours will be at St. Joseph's Church, 153 South Franklin Street, Holbrook, on Tuesday, May 18 from 4-8pm. Mass of the Christian Burial will be Wednesday, May 19 at 10:30am. Burial to follow at Union Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Community Autism Resources, 33 James Reynolds Road, Swansea, MA 02777 or to the Stan Mikita American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association (AHIHA) Kevin Delaney, 9345 N. Harding, Evanston, IL 60203 in Rick's name are requested. Arrangements handled by the Hurley Currie Funeral Home, HOLBROOK. For online guestbook and directions, visit www.thehurleyfuneralhomes.com
