CATEGORY: Event TYPE: Obituary DATE: 30 Apr 2014 NOTE: Emily R. (Stamp) Sherman, 93, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at home in Suffield, CT. She was born in Johnston, RI, a daughter of the late Martin and Anna Stamp. She was predeceased by her husband of 73 years Kenneth A. Sherman on September 23, 2013. She was also predeceased by 3 brothers; Martin, William and John Stamp, and 3 sisters Anna Kilguss, Marie Henry and Frieda Steere. Emily is survived by her daughter Donna Labbie and her husband Charles, and her son David Sherman and his wife Kathleen. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Michelle (Labbie) Ditmer and husband John, Stephen Sherman and wife Kristen, John Sherman and wife Katia, Laura Sanford and husband Timothy; also, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Kenneth and Emily were married on August 30, 1941 and spent their early years together in R.I., until Ken began his career as an air traffic controller for the FAA. They spent the last 40 years together in Suffield, CT where Ken was assigned to Bradley International Airport. Emily was a trained and accomplished hairdresser in R.I. and had many well satisfied customers who became many wonderful friends over the years. Emily started playing tennis in her 50's so Ken wouldn't have to go to the courts alone. She became an accomplished tennis player and continued to play into her 80's in South Florida, CT and Springfield, MA. She also became enamored with thoroughbred horse racing and enjoyed time at race tracks in New England and So. Florida with Ken and also with her father Martin. Emily was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Providence for many years and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Enfield, CT, where she volunteered her time and effort with Sunday School teaching.
Visitation and funeral will be held Monday, May 5, 2014 at 9am from the TUCKER-QUINN Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Ave. (Rt.44) Greenville, with a service at 11am in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 54 Cedar Swamp Rd., Smithfield. Graveside burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston. PLAC: Suffield, CT
